Hadith of the Day: Greetings

Today’s Hadith is about: Conveying Salaam

Hadith on Greetings

Hadith on the best Islamic trait of greetings / salam

The Messenger of Allah (salAllahu alaihi wasallam) said:

A man asked the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam), “What Islamic traits are the best?” The Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) replied, “Feed the people, and greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know.”

[Bukhari]

What do we learn from this Hadith?

A minor sign of the Day of Judgment is that individuals will just offer salaam (greetings) to the people that they only know. [Ahmad]

Nowadays we tend to think salaam isn’t a privilege of each Muslim. The common practice was to give salaam to any Muslim, regardless of whether you knew them or not.

Actually, it appears that today if you offer salaams to strangers they may take a gander at you, attempting to work out if they know you. Regardless of this, let us try to restore this sunnah for the love of the Prophet (sal Allahu alaihi wa sallam) and make it a normal routine with regards to perhaps the best attribute of Islam.
